Upper GastrointestinalCardiff and Vale University Health Board have informed us that some of the historical figures they have provided for the number of patients confirmed as urgent suspected cancer may not be accurate. Specifically, figures for the upper and lower gastrointestinal tumour sites have been underreported prior to April 2015. Prior to November 2017, one site in Betsi Cadwaladr reported all patients being referred for an upper and lower endoscopy as a UGI referral. However, following discussions with information department, these patients requiring upper and lower endoscopy are now being split between LGI and UGI.10910712011299129939211712698106103

General description

The patients shown here are those treated via the urgent route. The national target for these patients is:
at least 95 per cent of patients newly diagnosed with cancer, via the urgent suspected cancer route will start definitive treatment within 62 days of receipt of referral.

This table includes information on the number of urgent suspected cancer patients referred from primary care and confirmed urgent by the specialist. Not all of these patients will go on to have treatment, as further tests might show that they do not have cancer. This information has been included to provide additional contextual information for users to aid understanding on the performance of the health service in Wales.
